List all the 19 African countries subject to US Visa suspension, starting January 1, 2026.

According to the announcement of the United States of America (USA) Embassy in Nigeria, as of January 1, 2026, the issuance of visas to citizens of 19 countries, including some countries of Africa, will be suspended partially as a result of Presidential Proclamation 10998 on Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States.

These countries in Africa were affected and they are Angola, Benin, Burundi, Cote d Ivoire, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The other nations that are affected by the proclamation include the Antigua and Barbuda, Cuba, Dominica, Tonga and Venezuela.

The nonimmigrant Visa B-1/B-2 visitor visa and F, M, J student and exchange visitor visa as well as all immigrant visas except the limited exceptions of:

The proclamation has exemptions to immigrant visas of ethnic and religious minorities persecuted in Iran, Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) of US government employees, attendees of major sporting events, and lawful permanent residents (LPRs).

The limitations are limited to the foreign nationalities that are not on the United States on the effective date and do not have a valid visa at that time.

Those already in the US or those possessing valid visas by January 1, 2026, will not be included and visas granted until this date will not be canceled.

The US Embassy also explained that the concerned individuals could still continue with visa applications and book interviews, though they might not be eligible to be issued with a visa or enter US basing on the clauses of the proclamation.
